Deniz, a 19-year-old student, meets Umut while on vacation in Turkey. They fall in love, and in an attempt to stay together, Umut travels to Germany using a falsified passport. The forgery is discovered and Umut is arrested. The young pair is united only after he escapes, but hiding from the authorities proves taxing. Umut files an application for asylum and is allowed to stay in Germany for the time being. When Deniz's parents find out about the situation, they refuse to continue financing her independent life in an apartment. Deniz would rather work as a waitress after school than stop seeing Umut. Deniz has one final exam after another, while Umut feels guilty about neglecting his family; their problems, along with the reality of working every day, put a strain on their love. As their financial situation worsens, their relationship begins to fall apart. A number of unexpected events test the two youngsters who have grown up in different worlds. Their dream of a life together has to withstand many trials and tribulations while their young love is sorely tested.

A free-thinking teacher is transferred for disciplinary reasons into a village in the southeast of Turkey. The village, lying in the inaccessible mountain region close to the Iranian border, is cut-off from the external world during the winter months. The teacher encounters the poverty and harsh living conditions of the villagers, as well as their rich cultural heritage and pride. The external experience of an intellectual's first confrontation with life in a remote region of his country initiates an internal journey and the teacher looks into the depths of his soul. At the end of the winter, he leaves the village transformed. Hakkari'de Bir Mevsim (A Season in Hakkari), with Kenan Ormanlar's exceptional cinematography, Timur Selçuk's haunting score and Genco Erkal's outstanding performance, was awarded The Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1983. Because the film was banned at that time, the movie-goers in Turkey were able to see it four years later, in 1987.
