Open Call for 2015 SVA Summer Residency Program

Program Dates: June 1 - July 2
Application Deadline: April 1

This internationally renowned program offers artists an opportunity to work intensively in a private studio, receive individual critiques from faculty, and attend weekly lectures given by guest artists, critics, and gallery directors. The selected participant has exclusive use of a small studio located in the School of Visual Arts Chelsea Building. Faculty visits the studios Mondays through Thursdays. Exposure to the New York art world complements this on-site residency program. The program culminates in an open studio exhibition, which enables the participants to present their work to the public.

Created in 2004 by Moon and Stars Project and School of Visual Arts, the scholarship, to date, has enabled ten artists of Turkish origin to attend the program.

The scholarship is open to active professional artists residing in Turkey who are not represented by a gallery. Different from previous years, current undergraduate students are not eligible to attend. Applications from graduate students are welcome. Applicants should have fluency in English sufficient for engaging in meaningful dialogue with other participants.

In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the revelation of classified information and confidential documents is no longer the sole province of journalists or mere fodder for Hollywood films. Today, public access to what once was considered privileged information is a social reality, pointing to broader changes in the construction of our relationships and emphasizing the fact that—in our networked environment—virtually no information is private anymore. Private Matters brings together a group of artists who, through individual strategies of sharing various kinds of secure information with the audience, eliminates the boundaries between public and private. In this context, secrets are revealed, security measures of institutions are tested, and myths—both personal and collective—are interrogated. These works share a reliance on technology, which has become an integral factor in the way that we interact with others now; through various media, we share our statuses, moods, and follow each other in an endless voyeuristic cycle.

The Young Photographers Award is given annually since 2010 by Haluk Soykan to encourage and support undergraduate students of photography in Turkey. Administered by the Moon and Stars Project of The American Turkish Society, the program is made possible by a grant from Young Photographers Award Fund established by the donor, Haluk Soykan, at Turkish Philanthropy Funds.

The exhibition featuring a total of 22 selected works from 18 participating students will be available for viewing at Elipsis Gallery in Istanbul on November 12-30. A winner and two honorable mentions were selected by Anne Havinga, Yousuf and Estrellita Karsh Senior Curator of Photographs, and Karen Haas, Lane Curator of Photographs, both from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The winner of this year’s Young Photographers Award was awarded $5,000 for his photography work. Two honorable mentions were also named, who received $2,500 each.

Our deepest condolences

Actor and Director Passes Away

We are deeply saddened by the death of Turkish actor, playwright, and director Tuncel Kurtiz. Kurtiz leaves the cinema-loving community with a legacy of over seventy productions to marvel at his remarkable talent for generations to come. Born in 1936 in Izmit, he graduated from Istanbul University's English language and literature department and started acting in 1956 with the Dormen Theatre. The 1979 movie Sürü is remembered as one of his most noteworthy performances. Over his career spanning four decades, Kurtiz was the recipient of many awards in Turkey and also abroad. He was also known for being a director, producer and scenarist.  Most recently, Moon and Stars Project of The American Turkish Society had the honor of showing Lutfi Akad's The Law of the Border at The Space Between, featuring Kurtiz as one of the actors. Additionally in 2012, MASP showed an award-winning film by Fatih Akin The Edge of Heaven, as well as Inat Hikayeleri (Tales of Intransigence) in 2004, both of which starred Kurtiz.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.
