Moon and Stars Project of The American Turkish Society is proud to announce a collaborative concert featuring the Istanbul-based musical ensemble Kardeş Türküler with Grammy® Winner Arto Tunçboyacıyan and special guest Ara Dinkjian.

The ensemble will play traditional Anatolian, Middle Eastern and Balkan instruments, drawing upon the rich, varied and conjoined cultural and musical traditions that are their respective birthright: Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish, Azerbaijani, Georgian, Roma, and Armenian. Tonight’s show marks the first performance by Kardeş Türküler on an American stage.  Founded on the ideal of peaceful fraternity, the project is an attempt to represent the multicultural richness of Anatolia, which in the past has led to conflicts as much as musical diversity. Kardeş Türküler offers more than just good intentions though; their virtuosity and musicianship is truly second to none.

Kardes Turkuler (Songs of Fraternity) was first formed in 1993 as a concert project organized by the Boğaziçi University Folklore Club. Its singers and dancers were among the founding members of the Boğaziçi Performing Arts Ensemble (BGST), formed in 1995, and of which Kardeş Türküler came to comprise a part.  Kardeş Türküler has released six albums; performed over 130 concerts; headlined festivals throughout Turkey and Europe, and has been recognized with international accolades, including the award for “Best Film Music” at the prestigious Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival in 2001.

Arto Tunçboyacıyan is a world-renowned percussionist and vocalist of Turkish-Armenian descent. Born and raised in Turkey alongside his beloved brother, the renowned musician Onno Tunç, Tunçboyacıyan had appeared on numerous records in Europe, including ones with Turkish pop legend Sezen Aksu, before arriving in the United States in 1981. In the US, he has worked with jazz legends such as Chet Baker, Al Di Meola, Joe Zawinul and Paul Winter & The Earth Band.  Tunçboyacıyan currently helms numerous collaborative music projects including The Armenian Navy Band, a fifteen man orchestra rooted in a mix of contemporary and traditional Armenian and Anatolian music; Night Ark with Ara Dinkjian, SERART with System of a Down lead singer Serj Tankian and the quartet Human Element featuring Matthew Garrison, Scott Kinsey and Gary Novak. Tunçboyacıyan is the music director of Kardeş Türküler’s latest album Çocuk Haklı (The Kid is Right). He was recently afforded the honor of the 2011 Grammy® Award for Best New Age Album, Miho: Journey to the Mountain with Paul Winter Consort.

Ara Dinkjian, an American-Armenian musician, is acknowledged as one of the top oud players in the world.  Born in New Jersey, Dinkjian made his debut at the 1964 New York City World’s Fair at age five and went on to earn America’s first and only special degree in the oud from Hartt College of Music in 1980. Dinkjian is the founder of Night Ark, a groundbreaking quartet that blends Anatolian roots with jazz. In 2002 and 2008, Dinkjian was chosen to represent Armenia in the international oud festivals in Thessaloniki, Greece and Jerusalem, Israel. His hit song, Homecoming (Dinata Dinata/ Sarışınım), was performed at the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
